The château is named after the English general Charles Palmer, who purchased the property in 1814. After enormous investments, Palmer was forced to sell the property due to financial difficulties. The Pereire banking family bought the property and built the current château, which they named after its first owner. In the 1855 classification, Château Palmer was classified as a 3rd cru. In 1938, the château was sold to a consortium of four wine merchants. The Mähler-Besse and Sichel families still own the château. The harvest is brought in by a group of 120 pickers, who pick plot by plot and varietal by varietal. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel vats and lasts from 15 to 245 days. The temperature is electronically controlled. After fermentation, the wine is transferred to oak barriques, 25-30% of which are replaced annually. In February-March after the harvest, the barriques selected for Château Palmer are selected. After the second fermentation, the wine is blended and then rests in oak for at least another 18 months. The wine is clarified with fresh egg whites.
