Decugnano dei Barbi

Buy or order Decugnano dei Barbi wine

Unknown breeds unloved. A beautiful subtitle for the wines of Decugnano Dei Barbi. A small winery, located in one of Italy's most unknown regions. While Umbria's wines are nowhere near as popular as those from Tuscany, Veneto, or Puglia, they are nonetheless superior in quality. A fact also worthy of the wines of Villa Barbi.

The Italian wines from Umbria

Italy is a wine country par excellence. Wine is produced with great success in all twenty regions. Wine drinkers often find familiar names from Piedmont, Veneto, Tuscany, or Sicily, while lesser-known regions are also successful. Umbria is one of those undiscovered gems, where winemaking follows an authentic tradition. One of the smallest regions, yet beloved by wine connoisseurs. The wineries may be small, but they have great deeds. Something Decugnano Dei Bardi can attest to.

The wines of Decugnano Dei Barbi

The history of Villa Barbi, a nickname for Decugnano Dei Barbi, goes back a long way. Its namesake is Claudio Bardi, who founded his own winery in Orvieto, a prominent city in Umbria, in 1973. Claudio had been searching for a suitable location for winemaking for some time, until he stumbled upon the medieval Decugnano manor house and its estate. This was the ideal location for producing Umbria's finest wines. Remarkably, the church here dedicated this villa to Italian wines at the beginning of the thirteenth century.

Today, Enzo Bari, Claudio's son, has taken over the winery with the same dedication. Claudio passed away a few years ago, but his vision still flows through the halls of Villa Barbi. The winery owns approximately 30 hectares, making it a relatively large winery in the region around Orvieto. They produce a variety of wines, particularly notable for their combination of local and international grape varieties. Their flagship wine is a beautiful blend of Montepulciano, Sangiovese, and Syrah: AD 1212—a tribute to the year when Villa Decugnano was founded.
