Demand for Austrian wines is on the rise. More and more wine drinkers are becoming charmed by the soft, fresh, and friendly wines produced in this Alpine country. Despite the sulfite scandal of the mid-1980s, Austria is back in fashion. Thanks in part to the Diwald winery, where purity plays a key role.
The Austrian wines of Diwald
Diwald Winery was founded by the parents of current owner Martin Diwald in 1976. In 1980, during the pre-sulphur scandal, his parents were among the first winemakers to adopt a fully organic approach to their production. Thanks to their efforts forty years ago, organic viticulture is now a major player in Austria. Diwald is internationally regarded as a pioneer of organic wines, something the family is very proud of.
The vineyards in Wagram
Diwald's vineyards began with just 4 hectares, located in Wagram, a popular wine-growing region northwest of the Austrian capital, Vienna. Now, the vineyards encompass a whopping 20 hectares, all of which are organically farmed. Diwald Winery specializes in Riesling and Gruner Veltliner, which are considered phenomenal thanks to their gentle pressing. The local blue grape Zweigelt also holds a small place in the vineyards. Unique is the small planting of Chardonnay. This grape, along with Gruner Veltliner, forms an excellent duo in the Diwald Selection ChaGrü.
The finest wines from Diwald
Diwald's hero is undoubtedly the Gruner Veltliner. This national pride of Austrian wines also manages to create several crown jewels at Diwald, from the classic Diwald Selektion Gruner Veltliner to the sparkling wine Diwald Gruner Veltliner Brut. A personal favorite also exists in the form of Diwald Gruner Veltliner vol Loss. This white wine is a gem that our vinologists unanimously agree on: this is a perfect wine.
