The launch of Dom Pérignon 2008, in the second half of 2018, was more or less Richard Geoffroy's last official act. Dom Pérignon's acclaimed chef de cave has retired. As of 2019, Vincent Chaperon, who had worked alongside him for years, is his successor as chef de cave. For nearly 30 years, Richard Geoffroy held the torch of Dom Pérignon high. In the still-celebrated year 1990, he became assistant to the then chef de cave, Dominique Foulon. And the first Dom Pérignon under Richard as chef de cave was the legendary 1996. And now, the final vintage, the 2008, for which experts are at a loss for words. Under his visionary leadership, one magnificent Dom Pérignon after another has been released. Naturally, Richard Geoffroy worked on vintages of Dom Pérignon that are still maturing in the cellars in Épernay. But they will reach the market under the responsibility of the new chef de cave, Vincent Chaperon. Richard Geoffroy couldn't have given a more beautiful farewell. The brilliant 2008 is the elegant and harmonious result of paradoxes and contradictions. Dull, gray skies were common in 2008, in contrast to a generally sunny decade. The spring and summer of 2008 showed a complete lack of sunshine and therefore also of comfortable temperatures. But fortunately, the 2008 vintage was saved by a superb September. Exactly one week before harvest was scheduled to begin, which started on September 15th, the sun broke through, and for a full month, conditions were perfect with blue skies and a steady breeze from the north/northeast. The grapes proved riper than anyone had dared to hope. The harvest was a miraculous success.
