This winery isn't called Joy for nothing, because we had such a great time with these wines. At the gates of the estate, you're greeted warmly by the current owners, Vanessa and Kevin Gessner, and we discovered that Domaine de Joy has a remarkable history. It's not your typical family business, like many others. This emphasizes the unique character of Domaine de Joy, which also scores highly with its red wines from the Cotes de Gascogne region.

The French wines from the Cotes de Gascogne

We go back to the early 20th century. It was the great-grandfather of the current generation, Paul Gessner, who instantly fell in love with the region where Armagnac was produced. So enamored, in fact, that he left his native Switzerland and moved to the Cotes de Gascogne to learn the art of Armagnac. The generations that followed—André Gessner; Paul & Oliver Gessner; and now Vanessa & Kevin Gessner—have steadily enhanced Domaine de Joy's reputation. Its traditions and history have always been honored. This is evident in the continued strong connection to Armagnac.

The wines of Domaine de Joy

Domaine de Joy's vineyards now encompass 170 hectares. A remarkable amount, even in this region. The link with Armagnac is most evident in the vineyards. About ten percent are still planted with grape varieties that are part of this regional distillate. But the vast majority are still planted with white grape varieties from the Cotes de Gascogne region. Think Sauvignon Blanc, Gros Manseng, Ugni Blanc, and Colombard; it's no wonder all four are represented in the sales success of Domaine de Joy Enjoy Cotes de Gascogne Blanc.

Besides the white wine from Domaine de Joy in the Cotes de Gascogne, the winery has another major asset: red wine! This region in southwestern France isn't known for its red wines. However, Domaine de Joy has dared to give all-rounders like Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot a try in their vineyards. And with incredible success: Familie Gessler La Vie en Joy Red is one of the best-selling red wines from this region.
