In 1975, Andrew and Laurel Quady traded their hectic jobs in Southern California for a new challenge as winemakers. Their first major success was a port-like red wine made from the Zinfandel grape. At their winery in Madera, Central Valley, California, they evolved from wine enthusiasts to enthusiastic professionals. In 1980, they launched Essensia, a white port made from the Orange Muscat grape, followed in 1983 by Elysium, a red specialty made from the Black Muscat. In Europe, this grape is known as Muscat Hambourg. Due to high demand both domestically and internationally, the company was revamped, and in 1984, the Quadys were joined by two enthusiastic wine experts, Michael Blaylock (enologist) and Cheril Russell (marketing). Since then, several new specialty wines have been added to the selection, including Starboard and Electra. The Quady Winery is open to the public and features a tasting room and gift shop. Quady Winery's motto is “Keeping it sweet since 1975”.
