A dream winery. The winery is owned by the De Wet family, a sacred family in South African winemaking. Everyone with this iconic surname is a descendant of Jacobus De Wet, the first winemaker in South Africa. The founder of Excelsior Estate is Koos de Wet, who settled in Stellenbosch with his family in the mid-19th century. In 1859, he left the family estate after a heated argument. The reason for this was that he had fallen in love with his brother's fiancée. The love was mutual, and together they moved to Robertson, about 175 kilometers east of Cape Town.

When Koos de Wet arrived in Robertson, the valley was barren and dead. However, thanks to his efforts, and the clever use of the nearby Breede River, Robertson is now a beloved spot in the South African wine industry. Excelsior Winery boasts many well-known neighbors, such as Van Loveren, Bon Courage, and the illustrious Springfield Estate. With Excelsior in such good company, the wines are bound to be superb.

Innovations from Excelsior winery

From the very beginning, Excelsior has been innovating. Thanks to its innovations, the Robertson Valley has become a thriving area, where grapevines stretch as far as the eye can see. Furthermore, Excelsior has been pesticide-free since the 1970s. Currently, the fifth generation, Peter de Wet, is at the helm. Knowing that he has inherited the creativity of his forebears, Excelsior will continue to grow in the years to come.

The wines of Excelsior

Excelsior's wide selection is remarkable. The Excelsior Purebred wines, for example, are true entry-level wines. They're excellent for everyday use. If you're looking for something more distinctive for a dinner party, for example, the Excelsior Paddock Shiraz or Excelsior Sauvignon Blanc are excellent. For the more experienced drinker, Excelsior also has plenty to offer. Consider the Eselsior Norah Chardonnay, for example. A distinctive white wine, perfect for enjoyment.
