Our Review

I'm not a Primitivo fan, but I do think this is a good Primitivo. Especially because it has good acidity, which Primitivos often lack. Tannins, same story. It also has some fresher elements such as some floral (violet) notes, which gives it a bit more balance. Good finish too.

Zenko Primitivo di Manduria 2024 DOC, Italy

Zenko Primitivo di Manduria 2024 is a full-bodied red wine from Manduria in Puglia, made from 100% Primitivo by the renowned Fantini winery.

What does Primitivo di Manduria actually mean? It's a protected designation of origin from southern Italy known for powerful, ripe, and concentrated Primitivo wines with a soft structure. This cuvée showcases how ripe fruit and subtle oak aging combine in an accessible yet layered style.

Vineyards and region

The wine comes from Manduria in Puglia, one of the warmest and sunniest parts of southern Italy

  • Region: Manduria, the heart of Primitivo di Manduria DOC.

  • Soil: Clay and limestone soils that provide structure and complexity

  • Climate: Warm, dry summers promote optimum ripeness and concentration.

The combination of sunshine intensity and chalky soil gives the wine its powerful character and ripe style.

Vinification and maturation

After vinification, the wine matures briefly in barriques, which provides refinement without overpowering the fruit.

  • Maturation: Short maturation in barriques for soft tannins and subtle spiciness.

  • Alcohol: At 14% alcohol, the wine has enough body to support its full-bodied style

The wood maturation adds roundness and light vanilla notes, while the ripe fruit expression remains central.

Grape composition

Primitivo – Manduria
100% Primitivo from Manduria. This grape is known for its ripe fruit notes, soft tannins, and full structure.

Tasting notes and serving suggestions

In the glass, the wine reveals a deep ruby red color. The nose opens with aromas of ripe cherries, plums, and blackberries, complemented by notes of chocolate and vanilla.

On the palate, it is full and round with soft tannins and a pleasant spiciness. The finish is long and smooth.

  • Serving temperature: Drink this Primitivo preferably at around 16–18 °C so that the ripe fruit and spicy wood notes remain nicely balanced.

  • Dishes: Pairs well with red meat, game dishes, grilled vegetables or mature cheeses.
