Fleur du Cap wines are synonymous with optimal enjoyment. For over fifty years, this winery has amazed both friends and foes with their astronomically high quality. In the 1960s, the goal was to create a top-tier winery that would produce affordable, high-quality wines. Half a century later, we can only conclude that this has been more than achieved. Its wines, including the Fleur du Cap Essence line, are highly sought after by a wide audience worldwide.
The South African vineyards
Although South African wines are considered "New World," viticulture in South Africa is centuries old. It was the Dutch who first began cultivating grapes in the Cape of Good Hope. The Dutch influence is still evident in today's wine climate: many wineries have Dutch names, and the architecture is also Dutch-made. Perhaps the most prestigious wine region is Stellenbosch, a region immediately east of Cape Town. This is also where you'll find the Fleur du Cap cellars. The majestic grapes grow in the Western Cape, southwest of Stellenbosch.
The modern wine cellar in Stellenbosch
Fleur du Cap boasts a truly impressive wine cellar, Die Bergkelder. It's located on the main road that cuts through Stellenbosch. You simply can't miss it. In the 1960s, this cellar was perhaps the most modern in all of South Africa. Because Fleur du Cap was ahead of its time, the cellar remains one of the finest in South Africa. Moreover, it's in excellent company. The prestigious wineries Kleine Zalze, Neethlingshof, and Thelema are just a stone's throw away.
The grape varieties in Fleur du Cap wines
Fleur du Cap cultivates a wide variety of grapes. With half a century of experience, they know exactly where each grape thrives. It's a blend of local varieties and international favorites. They're capable of creating truly exceptional wines. For example, the Fleur du Cap Privee Sauvignon Blanc Unfiltered is a personal favorite of our vinologists. Furthermore, the Fleur du Cap Essence Pinotage represents South Africa's national pride: Pinotage. This grape is a welcome addition to many South African wines.
