Not ordinary wines, but impressive works of art. The winery is still young; the first vines were planted less than twenty years ago. However, Gran Moraine's wines have already built an impressive reputation. Because they come not from California, but from Oregon, further north, a glass of Gran Moraine wine offers a unique aroma and taste experience.
The American wines of Gran Moraine
When you think of American wines, it's hard to ignore California. With roughly 90% of American wine production, California holds the lion's share of the world's wine growing landscape. But don't be fooled; excellent wine is also produced in other states. Consider Oregon, nestled between Washington State and California. Although the sun shines less here than in California, Oregon also boasts a good wine-producing climate.
The wines of Gran Moraine
Gran Moraine Winery was founded by William Hill, a near-iconic creator of successful vineyards. He sought a challenge and looked beyond California's borders. He ended up in Oregon, in Willemette Valley. This new property, totaling a whopping 430 hectares, was the perfect location for a new winery. The name Gran Moraine is a nod to the Ice Age. This Willamette Valley was created by glacial flooding during the last Ice Age.

Only two grape varieties were used for planting the vineyards: Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. This choice wasn't entirely coincidental. The valley where the vineyards are planted enjoys a pleasant, cool climate and is relatively close to the coast. The conditions are comparable to those in Burgundy, where Chardonnay and Pinot Noir also made waves. It was precisely for this reason that William Hill chose these grapes and planted them in highly select plots, precisely where conditions are at their very best.
