The Austrian wines

Austrian winemaking has come out of its shell. For a long time, the reputation of wines from this Alpine country was subpar, but over the past fifteen years or so, production has been slowly rising again. Many wineries have a long history, but none come close to Klosterneuburg Abbey. This winery was founded in the 12th century, when Count Leopold III commissioned the construction of Klosterneuburg Abbey, then on the outskirts of Vienna. This monastery is still considered the home of Klosterneuburg Abbey's wine, and the vineyards surrounding it are among the finest in all of Austria.

The wines of Stift Klosterneuburg

Stift Kloster Neuburg is not only the oldest or largest winery in Austria (the total acreage encompasses over 100 hectares), it is also one of the most innovative. The world's first viticultural school was established within the monastery walls. It was here, among other things, that Dr. Fritz Zweigelt developed the Blauer Zweigelt, today Austria's definitive blue grape, in 1922. Stift Klosterneuburg is also a pioneer in climate conservation. For example, the winery has been Austria's first carbon-free estate since 2009.

At Stift Kloster Neuburg's vineyards, you'll primarily find well-known Austrian wines. Think Gruner Veltliner, Zweigelt, and the lesser-known St. Laurent. However, the winery also cultivates less conventional grape varieties in its vineyards, such as Weissburgunder, Riesling, and even Merlot and Chardonnay. With this distinctive feature, they delight wine lovers worldwide. The winery also offers some truly exceptional wines to savor during special occasions.
