What's unknown is unloved. That's why it's high time to taste Librandi wines. Excellent wines from Calabria with a truly unique character. Trying them is more than worth it, so what are you waiting for?

The Calabrian wines of Librandi

For this winery, we travel to perhaps the most unknown region when it comes to wines. Everyone knows that wine is produced throughout Italy and that each province has its own strengths. Everyone knows wine regions like Tuscany, Piedmont, and Veneto. Puglia, Trentino, and Abruzzo are also household names these days. However, for the Librandi winery, we have to travel to the very south of Italy: Calabria. A province where time seems to stand still.

Calabria has often faced stiff competition from the big names in Italian wine. However, the country is more than worth the effort. It can get quite hot there, but thanks to the coast, which is always nearby, it can cool down considerably at night. The Librandi family recognized this early on. In the 1950s, they were one of the first families to start producing wine commercially. A huge risk at the time, but it has more than paid off. Brothers Antonio and Nicodemo Librandi now represent the fourth generation and still make wine with the same passion as their ancestors.

The vineyards of the Librandi winery

The current generation is modernizing significantly, while still preserving traditions. They have been incredibly important for Calabria's most famous DOC classification: DOC Ciro. They also have a significant hand in DOC Melissa, one of Calabria's newest additions.

Librandi now encompasses approximately 65 hectares of vineyards. The lion's share of these is reserved for local grape varieties, such as Gaglioppo, Greco, and Mantonico. These are unfamiliar varieties to the average wine enthusiast; however, true wine connoisseurs will find their mouths watering. Gaglioppo, a grape variety the Librandi family has championed, is particularly well-regarded. The winery uses it to create the successful Librandi Segno Ciro Classico Rosso.

The Librandi wine from Italy

In the past, Librandi also planted several international varieties to remain relevant to wine drinkers across Europe. However, Librandi has returned to its roots: local varieties and local wines. A resounding success. The only traces of this "foreign" venture can still be found in the aromatic Librandi Critone. A perfect Calabrian wine, a blend of Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc: two powerhouses on the bilateral stage.

Librandi also has something for everyone. Leading wines from Calabria, wines that truly embody the power of this southern Italian region. A favorite for several years now is Librandi Asylia Bianco Melissa Greco, made from the refreshing Greco grape. For those who prefer something a little more vibrant, Librandi Efeso Calabria is recommended. This is also the flagship winery of a winery that has been a leader for four generations in one of Italy's most underrated wine regions.
