Louis Guntrum Winery is simply riding the wave of German wine. More and more wine drinkers are becoming enamored of the German winemaking style. We're not referring to the Liebfraumilch, Mainzer Domherr, or other sweet wines Germany used to be known for, but to the complex, generous, well-structured Riesling that perfectly translates the depth of its complexity into an excellent dry white wine.
The Riesling wines from Rheinhessen
Louis Guntrum is now among the top tier of German wines. They know their vineyards like the back of their hand. This isn't surprising, considering the family has been active in the vineyards since 1648, located in Nierstein, one of the highlights of the Rheinhessen region. Unfortunately, at the end of the 18th century, the family was driven out by French Catholics, who were forced to move east by the French Revolution. Fortunately, the family persevered, and during this time they also owned excellent vineyards on the east bank of the mighty Rhine.
The wines of Louis Guntrum
Since 1909, the vineyards have been restored to their former glory, and the family still runs this leading winery. Konstantin Guntrum has been at the helm of Louis Guntrum since 2003. Under his supervision, the winery has become much more aware of the terroir and the opportunities it presents. As a result, this is the era for dry, complex wines, giving Rheinhessen a completely different character.

Under Konstantin Guntrum's leadership, the winery has professionalized and modernized. It's not just Riesling that dominates; numerous other grape varieties now overrun the vineyards, such as Louis Guntrum Dornfelder or Louis Guntrum Grauburgunder. The winery also boasts an excellent Weissburgunder, also known as Pinot Blanc. Its flagship is the Spatburgunder, which Konstantin has commercially renamed Louis Guntrum Pinot Noir.
