Wijnhuis Maastricht: the name alone suggests it has a Dutch flavor. It's situated on a site that reminded its discoverers of the South Limburg landscape. It has retained that name throughout the centuries. Today, Wijnhuis Maastricht is synonymous with exquisite South African wines.

South African wines with a Dutch touch

As the name suggests, the Maastricht Winery is a South African winery with a Dutch touch. It is named after the Maastricht Farm, which stood on the site in the early 18th century. The farm was called Maastricht because the first settlers, monks from Maastricht, found the site similar to their own homes. The name Maastricht was therefore quickly adopted. It is said that the Maastricht Winery was one of the first nine registered wineries.

In 1982, the winery was acquired by Wheaty Louwe. He renovated and modernized the entire winery, giving it the grandeur Wijnhuis Maastricht boasts today. While production initially focused on cultivating good grapes for subsequent resale, Louwe decided to launch his own label: Wijnhuis Maastricht was born.

The vineyards of the Maastricht winery

Maastricht Winery is located just outside bustling Cape Town, near Durbanville. It was here that Wheaty Louwe planted impressive Cabernet Sauvignon vines, which currently produce their top grapes. Due to expansion and expansion, Maastricht Winery now boasts approximately 100 hectares of vineyards. However, Maastricht focuses on just a few grape varieties. No international Chardonnay, no beloved Chenin Blanc, and certainly no headstrong Pinot Noir. The Maastricht Winery vineyards only grow Sauvignon Blanc, Pinotage, a little Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The Maastricht wines from South Africa

We currently have three wines from Maastricht in our selection. The Maastricht Sauvignon Blanc is a refreshing, surprisingly complex white wine with incredible depth. Maastricht also offers two red wines: a Pinotage and a Merlot. The Maastricht Pinotage is a truly exceptional wine. Made from the indigenous Pinotage, this Maastricht red wine is truly the cream of the crop.
