The founding of Marques de Riscal

It all starts at the beginning. Marques de Riscal was founded over a century and a half ago, in 1858. It remains the oldest, still-operating bodega in the Rioja region. Thanks to Marques de Riscal's efforts, the Rioja region enjoys enormous prestige among wine lovers worldwide. After nearly 100 years of operation in this phenomenal Spanish wine region, Marques de Riscal decided to expand. In 1972, they saw potential in a plot of land about 300 km southwest of the Rioja region. They planted a relatively unknown grape variety there. In the 40 years that followed, this region developed enormously. Today, Rueda wines made from the Verdejo grape have become immensely renowned, and in 1974, they were awarded their own appellation: the Rueda DO.

The innovation of Spanish wines
