Meerlust Estate is one of Stellenbosch 's most respected wineries and a classic icon of South Africa . The estate is best known for its legendary Bordeaux blend , Rubicon, a wine that has brought international recognition to South African excellence.

The origin of Meerlust

Meerlust, founded in 1693, is one of South Africa's oldest wineries. The estate has been run by the Myburgh family for generations and combines historic architecture with modern winemaking techniques.

The name Meerlust refers to its location near False Bay, where the cooling sea breeze plays an important role in the climate of the vineyards.

Why is Meerlust so important in South Africa? Because it was one of the first producers to seriously establish South African Bordeaux blends internationally.

Location and terroir

Meerlust is located in the southern part of Stellenbosch, close to the coast. The influence of False Bay creates a temperate climate with cooling on hot days. This helps retain freshness and structure in the grapes.

The soils consist of weathered granite and clay layers, ideal for grape varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. This combination of soil and climate gives the wines their characteristic balance of power and refinement.

Grapes and style

Meerlust is best known for Bordeaux-inspired blends, with Cabernet Sauvignon as the backbone.

Characteristic of the style are:

  • clear structure and ripe tannins
  • balance between power and elegance
  • integrated wood use
  • long maturation possibilities

The wines are built to develop over years, but even in their youth they show coherence and precision.

Rubicon as a reference

Meerlust's most famous wine is Rubicon , a Bordeaux blend that has been considered one of South Africa's benchmarks since the 1980s. Rubicon combines structure, complexity, and aging potential and is often considered a benchmark for Stellenbosch.

With this wine, Meerlust showed that South Africa could compete with established European regions.

Meerlust within Stellenbosch

Within Stellenbosch, Meerlust occupies a classic position. The house embodies continuity and reliability, without following fashion trends. In a region where both strength and modernity are evident, Meerlust remains true to a balanced, terroir-driven style.
