Quinta do Portal is a beautiful family-run winery in the Douro Valley, Portugal. It's a very modern winery, well-insulated with slate, cork, and a grass roof. Unlike the grand old port houses, the port isn't transported to Porto to mature, but remains in the cellars of this Portal. The port region has changed considerably over the past twenty years. Portugal's accession to the European Union has brought significant European development funding to this region, significantly improving the quality of the vineyards. Infrastructure has also improved, with the construction of roads that have opened up the area—formerly accessible only by train along the Douro River—for the transport of people and trucks laden with wine.
