This Spanish wine producer may not have a particularly long track record, but the wines they create are among the best in Ribera del Duera. If you ask our vinologists, even among the best in Spain. They're powerful, yet offer considerable depth. A naturally challenging combination, which Bodegas Portia has more than achieved.
Portia wine from Spain
Spain is one of the world's largest wine-producing countries. Looking at the planted area, Spain is likely to be number one. Spain also boasts dozens of significant wine regions; wherever you go, you're always close to a vineyard. Internationally, the country is also prosperous. Who isn't familiar with a delicious Rioja, a sparkling cava, or a refreshing Rueda Verdejo? Of Spain's many wine regions, only a handful are incredibly successful; in recent years, Ribera Del Duero has gradually joined the ranks. It's no coincidence that Bodegas Portia is based in Ribera Del Duero.
The Spanish wines from Ribera Del Duero
The Ribera del Duero wine region has become increasingly popular in recent decades. It's the answer to the long-standing dominance of Rioja wines. Ribera del Duero is located a little further west, a two-hour drive north of Madrid. During the Ribera del Duero renaissance in the 1990s, the foundation for Bodegas Portia was laid. Vineyards were planted and a new winery was built. This was a resounding success, as Bodegas Portia is a popular destination, thanks in part to its impressive architecture.
The Vineyards of Portia
When the winery was founded in the early 1990s, the vineyards were planted. One important grape variety, in particular, became dominant: the national pride, Tempranillo. A grape that grew to prominence in Rioja, but also excelled elsewhere. A total of 160 hectares of vineyards have been planted. Because the vines are primarily oriented towards the east and south, the bunches receive maximum sunshine. This optimizes the ripening process, a characteristic that is clearly reflected in the quality of Bodegas Portia wines.
The Ribera Del Duero wines of Portia
Portia's red wines are all typical Ribera del Duera wines, with Tempranillo as the star. They are powerhouses, as Bodegas Portia certainly doesn't shy away from good oak aging. The highlight of the collection is the Portia Prima La Encina. Aged for an impressive 15 months, the wine is incredibly robust and robust: dark chocolate, robust tobacco, powerful cedar, and sultry vanilla. It's no wonder it received 94 points from James Suckling.
