The Portium winery is located in the heart of the Penedes wine region, just west of Barcelona. Until the 1970s, Penedes was practically unnamed as a wine region. Until then, the wines were primarily hard and strong. Since the early 1980s, Penedes has exploded as a wine region, and Portium has benefited from this. Portium's vineyards were primarily planted with Chardonnay, Macabeo, and Xarel-la in the mid-1980s. Portium chose these grape varieties for a reason. They are essential for the most famous sparkling wine from Penedes and the rest of Spain: Cava. Portium's cavas have since become a major name in Spain and the rest of Europe.
