Raventos, a major player in the Catalan wine world. The Raventos family owns the large and well-known Codorniu, a pioneer in the Cava industry. Codorniu is even the second-largest Cava producer in Spain. One of the Raventos descendants, Manuel Raventos, was president of Codorniu until 1982. However, the family had grown, and it became increasingly difficult to make well-considered decisions for the company. To ensure these relationships wouldn't become too lopsided, he decided to leave his wonderful and secure position in the family business and began looking for a new challenge. With all the knowledge he had gained within the family business, the next step in the wine world was a logical one.Looking for a new love
Together with his father, who respected and even encouraged his choice, they searched for the perfect land. They purchased 90 hectares of vineyards, divided into four microclimate zones and 40 separate plots. This allows all the grape varieties planted to receive the proper care and climate they require. Manuel Raventos planted several grape varieties, including Macabeo, parellada, xarel.lo, and monastrell, as well as "international" grapes such as Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah. This created a diversity of grapes for producing the finest wines and cavas. The first wine was produced in 1986, but it wasn't released until 1989 due to the long aging Raventos wines undergo. Raventos i Blanc produces 750,000 bottles annually, two-thirds of which are sparkling wines. The other third are still wines, lesser-known but very fine. The foundation for every Cava you find on the shelves of many wine merchants today can be traced back to this magnificent Cava house. It is located in Catalonia, in northeastern Spain, with Barcelona as its vibrant capital. The Cava house is housed in an old family farmhouse, which has been in the hands of the Raventos family since 1497. This is also where the birth of Cava took place. It was Josep Raventos Fatjo who, in 1872, was the first to create a sparkling wine from local favorites such as Macabeo, Parellada, and Xarel-lo.
