With all the knowledge he had gained within the family business, the next step in the wine world was a logical one.

Looking for a new love

Together with his father, who respected and even encouraged his choice, they searched for the perfect land. They purchased 90 hectares of vineyards, divided into four microclimate zones and 40 separate plots. This allows all the grape varieties planted to receive the proper care and climate they require. Manuel Raventos planted several grape varieties, including Macabeo, parellada, xarel.lo, and monastrell, as well as "international" grapes such as Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah. This created a diversity of grapes for producing the finest wines and cavas. The first wine was produced in 1986, but it wasn't released until 1989 due to the long aging Raventos wines undergo. Raventos i Blanc produces 750,000 bottles annually, two-thirds of which are sparkling wines. The other third are still wines, lesser-known but very fine.

The foundation for every Cava you find on the shelves of many wine merchants today can be traced back to this magnificent Cava house. It is located in Catalonia, in northeastern Spain, with Barcelona as its vibrant capital. The Cava house is housed in an old family farmhouse, which has been in the hands of the Raventos family since 1497. This is also where the birth of Cava took place. It was Josep Raventos Fatjo who, in 1872, was the first to create a sparkling wine from local favorites such as Macabeo, Parellada, and Xarel-lo.

Cava wine from Raventos

With the birth of cava, the Raventos family founded the impressive Codorniu cava house. For decades, they achieved great acclaim with their accessible cava wines. In 1982, then-owner Josep Maria Raventos i Blanc decided to change course. He founded the Raventos cava house. The goal was to produce high-quality cava that could compete with the best cava in the region.

Raventos wine with champagne cork

Raventos' success was born quickly. Thanks to the craftsmanship passed down through generations, the Raventos family managed to craft the finest cavas. Their cava wines are produced using the same method as champagne, known as the "methode traditionelle," including the impressive champagne cork. This creates a festive atmosphere, and cava is considered a more affordable alternative to the iconic champagne.

The Cavas of Raventos

Inspired by French champagne, Raventos cavas were developed. Thanks to the dedication shown back then, we can now enjoy a wide selection. The classic Raventos i Blanc Blanc de Blancs Cava, for example, is an all-time favorite. For wine drinkers who enjoy a distinctive glass of cava, Raventos i Blanc De La Finca Cava is highly recommended. Besides excellent sparkling wines, Raventos i Blanc also produces an exquisite still wine. The distinctive Raventos Xarel-lo Natural is a much-loved wine among our vinologists.
