The wines from Chile
Chilean wines are still considered New World wines, even though viticulture here is centuries old. However, commercial viticulture was a relatively late development. Don Domingo Fernández Concha, founder of Vina Santa Rita, played a significant role in this. In 1880, he was a highly successful and well-regarded businessman in Chile. He had a vision; a dream: his own winery. But he wanted to do it right. He assembled the best team; only the best winemakers from France were good enough for Don Domingo. He was also the one who introduced French grape varieties to the Maipo Valley. In 1980, Vina Santa Rita became part of the massive Claro Group, creating enormous scope for innovation and investment. This allowed for a massive expansion of the vineyards. Santa Rita's vineyards now encompass over 3,000 hectares, an astronomical amount even by Chilean standards. Vina Santa Rita is present in all of Chile's major wine regions.
