Segura Viudas Cava Brut Rosé Cava, Spain
Segura Viudas Cava Brut Rosé is a refined sparkling rosé perfect for aperitifs, light dishes, and moments when you want to combine red fruit and fresh tension in one glass. This cava deliberately seeks a balance between primary fruit expression and subtle complexity through a minimum of 12 months of lees aging, while 9 g/l dosage keeps it pleasantly dry and approachable. This perfectly aligns with the Brut style designation. What does Brut mean for Cava? It signifies a dry style with limited dosage after disgorgement.
Vineyards and Region
This rosé is firmly rooted in the tradition of Cava, where origin, grape selection, and bottle fermentation together define the style.
- Location / Origin: Segura Viudas is historically rooted in Penedès, just outside Barcelona, the area where Cava originated and where Sant Sadurní d’Anoia grew into the Cava capital.
- Regional context: This wine falls under DO Cava, the Spanish appellation of origin for sparkling wine made according to the traditional method.
- Grape selection in the origin: For rosé cava, red grapes such as Trepat, Pinot Noir, and Garnacha are permitted. This precisely matches the composition of this cuvée.
Vinification and aging
The cellar approach here is entirely focused on fine mousse, abundant fruit, and a smooth, dry style.
- Fermentation: The color and aromas are created through traditional skin maceration. Trepat undergoes 24 hours of maceration at 12–14 °C, Garnacha 12 hours at 16–18 °C, and Pinot Noir macerates during transport to the cellar, after which both the 1st and 2nd fermentations proceed with specially selected yeasts.
- Aging / Bottle aging: The wine ages for a minimum of 12 months on the lees. This provides more depth and finesse, while keeping the fruit clear and lively.
- Alcohol percentage: At 12% alcohol, this cava remains light enough for aperitifs and lunch, but has enough body to also hold its own well at the dinner table.
Grape Composition
The blend is classic for rosé cava and gives this wine its fresh, fruity, and smoothly structured style.
- 40% Trepat – Cava: Trepat gives the wine fresh red fruit, finesse, and a lively character. This Catalan grape is strongly associated with rosé cava and is known for aromas of strawberry, raspberry, and cherry.
- 40% Pinot Noir – Cava: Pinot Noir brings extra aromatic intensity and a spicy touch to the blend.
- 20% Garnacha – Cava: Garnacha gives the wine more flavor and roundness, making it seem softer and more approachable overall.
Tasting Notes and Serving Suggestions
Light strawberry-pink in the glass, with a fine and persistent mousse. On the nose and palate, this Cava opens with strawberry, redcurrant, grenadine, and cherry, followed by a fresh, soft, and beautifully balanced structure. The finish remains smooth, fruity, and invitingly drinkable.
- Serving Temperature: 8–10 °C works best here, as this range keeps the mousse crisp and allows the red fruit to express itself with extra freshness.
- Dishes: Aperitifs, fish or vegetable starters, seafood rice, salmon, and grilled tuna pair beautifully with this cava, as it elegantly combines freshness, fruit, and suppleness.
Accolades
- Silver, Mundus Vini 2022: An international silver medal confirming that this Brut Rosé stands out strongly even outside Spain.
- Gold, Premis Vinari 2022: Awarded gold in an important Catalan competition for wine and sparkling wine.
More information about Segura Viudas
Segura Viudas operates from a historic estate in Penedès whose origins date back to the 12th century. The estate was revitalized in the 1950s when the Segura brothers bought it, and in 1969 they launched their first iconic premium cava. This combination of an ancient site, deep local roots, and a modern cava focus can still be felt in the house style.
