We're flying to the other side of the world: Australia. A wine country par excellence, where wine has been produced for over a century and a half. One of the oldest wineries is Tahbilk, founded in the mid-19th century in the state of Victoria, almost a two-hour drive north of Melbourne. Here, the family has been producing arguably Australia's finest wines for generations. The Tahbilk winery was founded in 1860 in Victoria, the southeastern state of Australia. The first few decades were not particularly successful for the winery. This changed in 1925 when Tahbilk was purchased by Reginald Pubrick. The family business passed from son to son; Eric Purbrick first took over the winery, followed by his son John. Now, the great-grandson of the original founder, Alister, and his daughter Harley Pubrick are the driving forces behind Tahbilk, bringing the winery to five generations of craftsmanship.
The Tahbilk wines from Australia
Each owner has developed their own vision for Tahbilk. Throughout Tahbilk's history, various vineyards have been planted, wineries renovated, and commercial opportunities explored. Now, Alister and Harley are primarily focused on sustainable viticulture, ensuring the continued operation of the business for future generations.
The vineyards of Tahbilk
The most striking feature of Tahbilk Winery is its vineyards. Tahbilk encompasses a whopping 200 hectares, with some vineyards being exceptionally old. The Cabernet Sauvignon dates back to 1949, while the Marsanne vineyards date back to the 1920s. The icing on the cake is the unique Shiraz parcel, planted as early as 1860. Tahbilk also boasts an incredibly diverse vineyard. Alongside classics like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Chardonnay, you'll find a large proportion of traditional Rhone varietals, which is quite unique among Australian vineyards. Think of grapes like Marsanne, Roussanne, Grenache, and Mourvedre; grapes that are exceptionally rare in Australia. Yet, at Tahbilk, they know how to make beautiful wines from them.
What are the best wines from Tahbilk?
Tahbilk Winery produces a host of stars. Each and every one of them is a high-quality wine that elevates Australian viticulture. The Cotes de Rhone varietals, in particular, are garnering applause from wine drinkers. Our personal favorite is undoubtedly Tahbilk Old Vines Cabernet Shiraz, made from the estate's finest and oldest grapes. Tahbilk Vines Marsanne is also a fine example of craftsmanship. Even in the Cotes du Rhone, few winemakers are able to create a successful 100% Marsanne wine.
