Marimar Torres is the fourth generation of the renowned winemaking family that originated in Catalonia, Spain. In 1986, she founded her own winery in the Russian River Valley, in Sonoma County. She chose this location for its cool climate, which is strongly influenced by the fog resulting from the proximity of the Pacific Ocean. She wanted to focus on planting Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, grape varieties that can be made into great wines in this milder climate. Marimar Estate consists of two vineyards: the Don Miguel Vineyard and the Doña Margarita Vineyard, which together cover 32 hectares. A boutique winery by California standards, Marimar Torres works exclusively with grapes from her two own vineyards. This allows her to control the entire process, from the starting grape to the finished product. She also specializes in Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, which are not common in California. The vineyards are organically farmed and certified. Since 2010, the transition to biodynamic viticulture has been underway. The vines in the Marimar vineyards are planted according to European methods: 5,000 per hectare, and yields per vine are low, yet highly concentrated. After harvest and pressing, vinification takes place in oak barrels from Allier, France, 20% of which are new. After 100% malolactic fermentation, the young wine is aged for another ten months. This Chardonnay has a complex bouquet of blossom and citrus. The flavors offer notes of vanilla, hazelnut, and creamy notes. A beautiful balance between freshness and roundness.
