He was one of the 24 knights who fought on behalf of King Alfonso for the city of Jerez. In gratitude, he was given a plot of land, on which he decided to grow grapes. Initially, sherry wines weren't particularly popular, but towards the end of the Middle Ages, Valdespino's sherry demand soared.

Though they started small, Valdespino has since become a major player. Valdespino's vineyards total 186 hectares, all of which are managed independently.
