Buy or order Villa Maria wine
"New Zealand's most awarded winery." It's been Villa Maria's tagline for years. We couldn't agree more. It's a major force in New Zealand. Not so much in terms of size, but rather in its actions. They don't shy away from experimentation, and their initially unconventional ideas become the standard for New Zealand wines years later. Just look at the screw cap. Years ago, everyone looked at Villa Maria strangely when they started using screw caps on their New Zealand wines; now, it's the standard.
The New Zealand wines
New Zealand's winemaking history is relatively short. It wasn't until the 1980s that New Zealand wines began to be exported worldwide, albeit at a small rate. It's quite remarkable, to say the least, that Villa Maria was founded in 1961. It all began with Sir George Fistonich, a winemaker with English-Croatian roots. He leased 3 hectares of land from his father. He began growing grapes on just 1 hectare. Every year after the harvest, the remaining funds were assessed, and George purchased more land. And not just for someone who was only 21 years old.

These few hectares have now grown into a winery with a whopping 400 hectares under its own ownership. Villa Maria also has several long-standing, sustainable partnerships with numerous other winegrowers, bringing the total acreage to a remarkable 800 hectares. Villa Maria also boasts other unique features. Besides its vineyards in the renowned Marlborough region, Villa Maria also has vineyards in the lesser-known Hawkes Bay region. Even deep in the North Island, near Auckland, Villa Maria produces wine. Besides a large, award-winning selection, Villa Maria ensures that New Zealand wines are more than just Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc.

When you think of New Zealand wines, Sauvignon Blanc is hard to ignore. However, Villa Maria has much more to offer. Their Villa Maria Private Bin Pinot Grigio is a truly unique wine, offering a contemporary take on this originally Italian grape. They also specialize in Chardonnay, from the simple Villa Maria Private Bin Chardonnay to the highly distinctive Villa Maria Single Vineyard Taylors Pass Chardonnay. Villa Maria also boasts arguably the most New Zealand-style red wines in its range. From a refreshing Pinot Noir to a spicy Cabernet Sauvignon, Villa Maria has it all.
