South African wines were often dismissed as simple. Good and fine, but not exceptional. Fortunately, this is changing. Over the past two decades, South African vineyards have been hard at work. There has been experimentation, innovation, and investment. Wine regions have emerged. Stellenbosch, for example. Not entirely coincidentally, the birthplace of Waterkloof wines.South African wines from Stellenbosch
Waterkloof is located in Somerset West. Because this village has practically merged with Cape Town, it appears like a suburb. However, with a population of 55,000, Somerset West is comparable to a medium-sized municipality in the Netherlands. Technically, Somerset West belongs to one of South Africa's most illustrious wine regions: Stellenbosch. This makes Somerset West an excellent base.Paul Boutinot, who purchased the estate in 2004, also saw this. From that moment on, Waterkloof wines have become an integral part of the South African wine world. Paul Boutinot's boundless talent ensured that these Stellenbosch wines achieved near-iconic status.
The vineyards of Waterkloof
One of the reasons Paul Boutinot purchased the Waterkloof Estate was the vineyards' prime location. Situated just three kilometers from the ocean at an altitude of 300 meters, a stroll through the vineyards allows you to enjoy not only the beautiful grapes but also the breathtaking ocean views. The vineyards boast numerous high-flyers. It's clear that Paul Boutinot drew inspiration from France, where he also has vineyards. Besides local favorites like Chenin Blanc and Syrah, the Waterkloof vineyards also boast Mourvedre, Cinsault, Sauvignon Blanc, and even Petit Verdot. Grape varieties with depth and intensity, a quality that is immediately evident in the Waterkloof wines.
