Evel Branco Douro DOC 2022 Portugal
Evel Branco Douro DOC 2022 is a fresh, aromatic white Douro wine from Real Companhia Velha. The wine comes from high-altitude vineyards at Quinta do Casal da Granja and Quinta de Cidrô, two locations where a cooler climate and slow ripening ensure fruitiness, freshness, and a lively structure. Evel is also a historic name within Portugal: the brand was registered as early as 1913 and still stands for an elegant, smooth, and pleasantly drinkable style.
Vineyards and region
Evel Branco originates from the Douro, specifically from cooler zones that are particularly suitable for white wines.
• Location / Origin: The grapes come from Quinta do Casal da Granja in Alijó and Quinta de Cidrô in São João da Pesqueira. These two origins give the wine its combination of aromatic freshness, ripe fruit, and Douro structure.
• Altitude: Quinta do Casal da Granja is situated on the high plateau of Alijó, between 500 and 600 m in elevation. This location provides cooler summers, slower ripening, and preservation of fresh acidity.
• Climate & Influences: Quinta do Casal da Granja experiences more rain, colder winters, and cooler summers than lower-lying Douro vineyards closer to the river. This makes this quinta highly suitable for white wines with freshness and aromatic precision.
• Soil: The soils consist partly of typical Douro schist and partly of deeper, more structured plateau soils. Schist provides tension and concentration, while the cooler plateau conditions help keep the fruit bright.
• Quinta de Cidrô: This quinta is located between 450 and 600 m in elevation and has a milder climate than many classic Douro vineyards. The combination of altitude, gentle slopes, and ventilation helps white grapes ripen slowly and evenly.
Grapes
Evel Branco 2022 is a blend of classic white grape varieties from Portugal.
• Viosinho – Douro: Viosinho adds structure, body, and ripe white fruit to the blend. This grape is popular in the Douro because it can combine aromatic power with sufficient freshness.
• Rabigato – Douro: Rabigato brings vibrant acidity, citrus, and tension. This keeps the wine fresh and energetic on the finish.
• Fernão Pires – Douro: Fernão Pires adds floral aromas, ripe fruit, and a soft, approachable fruitiness.
• Moscatel Galego – Douro: Moscatel Galego provides aromatic lift, floral notes, and a recognizable fragrant touch to the blend.
Vinification and aging
The vinification aims for freshness, aromatic expression, and a pure white Douro style.
• Harvest & Selection: The grapes are harvested at optimal ripeness, with an emphasis on aroma, freshness, minerality, and natural acidity. This is important for a white Douro that has ripe fruit but remains lively.
• Fermentation: Viosinho, Rabigato, Fernão Pires, and Moscatel Galego are vinified separately in stainless steel tanks. Processing the grapes individually better preserves the character of each variety.
• Aging: The wine ages for 6 months in stainless steel tanks. Stainless steel keeps the fruit aromas clean and fresh, while aging provides additional balance and texture.
• Alcohol Percentage: At 13% alcohol, Evel Branco has sufficient body for its ripe fruit and full initial taste, while the fresh acidity keeps the wine lively.
Tasting notes and serving suggestions
In the glass, Evel Branco has a beautiful straw color, with intense aromas of flowers, white fruit, peach, and melon. The taste is fruity and flavorful, with lively acidity, a fresh mineral touch, and a lingering finish. Everything remains bright, smooth, and refreshing.
• Serving temperature: Serve this Douro Branco at 8–10 °C, so that the white fruit, floral aromas, and fresh acidity remain crisp and lively.
• Dishes: Delicious with fresh seafood, grilled fish, mussels à Bulhão Pato, light fish dishes, and spicy chorizo.
Awards
• 88/100 and Best Buy, Wine Enthusiast (2022): Rated as Very Good, with an emphasis on freshness, apple, citrus, minerality, and immediate drinkability.
