Jean Vullien & Fils Roussette de Savoie 2023 Savoie, France

Jean Vullien Roussette de Savoie 2023 is a dry white mountain wine from the Combe de Savoie, made from 100% Altesse. This local grape is known here for elegant white wines with floral aromas, exotic fruit, and a beautiful round structure. The wine comes from the slopes around Fréterive and Saint Jean de la Porte, where chalky scree soils, south-facing exposure, and protection from northern winds together create a fresh yet full-bodied style.

Vineyards and region

This Roussette de Savoie comes from the Combe de Savoie, between Chambéry and Albertville.

Location / Origin: The vineyards are located on the hillsides of Fréterive and Saint Jean de la Porte, in the heart of the Combe de Savoie. This location is protected from northern winds and gives Altesse a ripe, yet fresh expression.

Winery: Domaine Jean Vullien is located in Fréterive, at the foot of the Massif des Bauges. The estate has 38 hectares of vineyards, focusing on local grape varieties such as Jacquère, Altesse, Roussanne, and Mondeuse.

Soil: The vines grow on chalky scree soils with stones. This argilo calcaire soil, a combination of clay and limestone, gives the wine structure, tension, and a mineral undertone.

Exposure: The slopes face directly south. This sunny exposure allows Altesse to ripen well, while the mountainous environment helps preserve freshness in the wine.

Grape composition

This white Savoie wine is made entirely from Altesse.

Altesse – Roussette de Savoie: Altesse gives this wine its floral aroma, exotic fruit notes, round structure, and long finish. In Savoie, this is the grape behind Roussette de Savoie, a style that has more body and complexity than many lighter mountain wines from the region.

Vinification and aging

The vinification focuses on freshness, aromatic purity, and additional texture.

Harvest & Pressing: The grapes are mechanically harvested and immediately pneumatically pressed. Pneumatic pressing is a gentle method that helps keep the juice pure and fine.

Fermentation: Alcoholic fermentation lasts approximately 3 weeks at a low temperature in thermo-regulated stainless steel tanks. This cool fermentation helps preserve the fruit and floral aromas of Altesse.

Malolactic conversion: The wine undergoes malolactic conversion. This process converts sharper malic acid into softer lactic acid, making the wine feel rounder and smoother.

Bâtonnage: The wine undergoes bâtonnage twice a week. This involves stirring the fine lees through the wine, which adds creaminess, structure, and length.

Production: Approximately 30,000 bottles of this Roussette de Savoie are produced.

Tasting notes and serving suggestions

In the glass, Jean Vullien Roussette de Savoie 2023 has a pale golden color with green reflections. The aroma is complex and subtle, with exotic fruit, hawthorn blossom, and orange blossom. The taste is round, balanced, and elegant, with beautiful length and sufficient body to develop further for several years.

Serving temperature: Serve this Roussette de Savoie at 10–12 °C, so that the floral fruit, round structure, and fresh mountain wine style come together beautifully.

Dishes: Delicious with charcuterie, shellfish, river fish, fish from mountain lakes, Beaufort cheese, fondue, raclette, tartiflette, and local Savoie dishes.
