Louis Latour Viognier d'Ardèche 2024 Ardèche, France
Louis Latour Viognier d'Ardèche 2024 is an aromatic white wine from the Coteaux de l'Ardèche, made from 100% Viognier. Maison Louis Latour deliberately chose this grape in 2007, which originally comes from the northern Côtes du Rhône and had almost disappeared before becoming popular worldwide again. In the Ardèche, Viognier grows on steeper plots than the house's Chardonnay, with a clay and limestone base. This gives the wine its combination of apricot, almond, a fresh start, and a round, slightly saline finish.
Vineyards and region
The wine comes from the Ardèche, where Louis Latour has been applying Burgundian precision to southern vineyards since the late 1970s.
• Location / Origin: The grapes come from the Coteaux de l'Ardèche, within the IGP Ardèche. The wine is vinified in Louis Latour's cellar on the outskirts of Alba la Romaine.
• Soil: The vines grow on clay and limestone. This combination helps Viognier achieve ripe fruit, roundness, and fresh tension.
• Vineyard: The Viognier is planted on steeper plots than Louis Latour's Chardonnay in the Ardèche. This location contributes to concentration and aromatic expression.
• Vineyard & Harvest: The vines are on average 15 years old, with a yield of 35 hl per hectare. The grapes are harvested by hand, allowing the aromatic fruit to be carefully processed.
Grape composition
This white Ardèche wine is made entirely from Viognier.
• Viognier – Ardèche: Viognier gives this wine its aromatic character, with notes of apricot, almond, orange, and soft roundness. The grape is known for its fragrant style and full texture, but here it gains a fresh, pure form through stainless steel vinification.
Vinification and aging
The vinification aims to preserve aromas, freshness, and a round yet clear texture.
• Fermentation: The wine ferments traditionally in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks and undergoes full malolactic fermentation. What is malolactic fermentation? This is a second conversion where sharper acids become softer, making the wine feel rounder and smoother.
• Aging: The wine ages for 12 months in stainless steel tanks. This ensures that the aromas of apricot, orange, and almond remain bright, without the influence of wood.
• Aging potential: This Viognier has an aging potential of 3 years. This suits its fresh, aromatic style, where fruit and roundness are central.
Tasting notes and serving suggestions
In the glass, this Viognier has an intense yellow color with golden reflections. The aroma is subtle and aromatic, with apricot tart and almond, followed by candied orange, caramel, and a slight salinity on the palate. The finish is elegant and balanced, with a soft roundness and a refined bitterness.
• Serving temperature: Serve this Viognier at 10–12 °C, so that the apricot, almond, fresh attack, and round structure come together beautifully.
• Dishes: Excellent as an aperitif and with duck terrine with chestnut, pan-fried foie gras with apricot, fine charcuterie, and soft cheeses.
More information about Maison Louis Latour
