When discussing German wines, it's hard to ignore Riesling. For this Von Winning Grainhubel, we're heading to perhaps Germany's most beautiful wine region: Pfalz. Situated on the French border with Alsace, this region's location is perfect. The most beautiful part of this wine region is the Weinstrasse, an 85-kilometer route that passes through all the beautiful areas. Villages like Forst, Ruppertsberg, and Bad Durkheim are iconic in this area. Deidesheim, the home of Von Winning, also has an impressive history, thanks in part to its winery. Von Winning is a force to be reckoned with; a pioneer; an example to many. What they can do with the Riesling grape is almost legendary. The vineyards of Von Winning Grainhubel are located directly behind the beautiful country house in Deidesheim. Looking out the window, you can almost literally see the grapes growing throughout the season. This unique vineyard has a complex soil structure. In prehistoric times, this was a coral reef. Over decades, the soil has developed into a brimming with loam, red sandstone, clay, and limestone. This mix creates a unique growth process for the Riesling vines, which draw a tremendous amount of nutrients from the soil. After the (naturally manual) harvest, the grapes undergo spontaneous fermentation in 500-liter wooden barrels. The juice then matures for another 18 months on its own yeast, giving it the depth and complexity you expect from this Riesling.
