At Alvi's Drift, every effort is made to maximize the flavor experience characteristic of a grape variety for the wines in the Signature series. This is also the case with this Cabernet Sauvignon.
The success of Alvi's Drift
Alvi's Drift is a winery in the Breede River Valley. Alvi's Drift is the name of the drift at the farm, which crosses the Breede River. The Drift was built in 1928 by Alvi's grandfather. The winery is just one part of a long-running and successful enterprise. Alvi's Drift has released a range of wines under the Alvi's Drift label, which, to a certain extent, originated with Alvi as an interest and a hobby. The wines have been very successful and have received numerous awards and rave reviews in various competitions and wine publications.
With 420 hectares of vineyards growing nineteen different grape varieties, Alvi's Drift is the largest family-owned winery in South Africa. Only grapes from their own vineyards are used. The majority of the vineyards are situated on gentle slopes along the banks of the Breede River. The best vineyards have low-yielding vines. Fertilization of the vines comes from natural compost sourced from the farm.
A smooth red wine from Alvi's Drift
The wine was fermented on the skins in contact with French oak. During fermentation, the wine was hand-pumped five times a day to gently maximize color extraction. After fermentation, the wine was aged for eight months in French oak, where it also completed malolactic fermentation.
The color is a beautiful dark garnet red. The nose reveals aromas of blackberries with hints of vanilla and chocolate. The wine has a pleasant body with well-balanced tannins. Flavors of blackberry, cassis, and toast linger in this robust yet supple wine. Ideal with roasted and barbecued meats and pasta dishes.
