Behind the beautiful wines of Babydoll Babydoll is winemaker Natalie Christensen. For the wine connoisseurs among us: she is considered one of New Zealand's most talented winemakers. In 2018, Natalie was named one of the world's most influential women in wine by The Drinks Business Magazine. With a Master of Science and a Bachelor of Music, she is the perfect fit for Babydoll. She uses her scientific creativity to create expressive and award-winning wines from New Zealand's finest wine-growing regions. But her creativity is far from over. The name Babydoll originates from the small sheep used to maintain the grass between the vineyards. These small sheep, no taller than 60 cm, cannot reach the bunches, but they do ensure abundant life and a biological balance within the vines. Her love for the sheep is also evident on the label, where you'll find a so-called Babydoll.

The harvest of the Pinot Noir

The old vineyards filled with Pinot Noir grapes are in perfect condition, the sheep are working their shifts, and the vines are soaking up all the beautiful influences of the surrounding area. The warmth of the sun ensures the Pinot Noir grapes ripen evenly, while the freshness of the wind and falling nighttime temperatures add even more depth. Natalie harvests the grapes around the end of March, when the red grapes have reached their peak ripeness. This always takes place in the morning to protect the bunches from oxidation and bruising during transport. All bunches are harvested by hand, ensuring only the finest bunches are used in this red Babydoll wine. After pressing, some of this red Pinot Noir is aged in oak barrels. Some new and some used barrels are used, making this Pinot Noir even fuller and more powerful.

The aroma and taste of the Babydoll Pinot Noir

The result is stunning, and that's immediately apparent upon pouring this red wine. A clear, bright red color with purple highlights is revealed. Nosing the glass, we smell blueberries, red fruit, and notes of mocha and spice. The aroma is truly captivating and evokes a high-end Burgundy. The palate is also enchantingly beautiful, with deep flavors of juicy red fruit, balanced by soft tannins and a delightfully subtle, toasted finish.
