The Barista Black Pinotage is a new masterpiece from perhaps South Africa's most talented winemaker – Marc Kent. This multi-talented man founded Boekenhoutskloof but continues to forge a reputation with innovative wines. Barista's wines are among his latest gems.

The wines of Boekenhoutskloof

Boekenhoutskloof is based in Franschhoek, in the Western Cape. Marc Kent draws inspiration from French wines, particularly those from the Northern Rhône. He visits the vineyards in this prominent region every year. This is primarily due to the grape varieties used in South Africa, where Syrah, Semillon, and Cabernet Sauvignon are the dominant grapes.

The Barista wines from South Africa

While Boekenhoutskloof's base is in Franschhoek, Marc Kent looks beyond its borders. At the beginning of the last decade, the vineyards in Swartland caught Marc's attention. This wine region lies further north and is notable for its much warmer climate than the wine regions closer to the ocean. More and more winemakers are discovering Swartland, and in 2013, Boekenhoutskloof decided to purchase the vineyards on the slopes of Kasteelberg. It proved to be a bull's-eye, as the fine combination of granite, quartz, slate, and sandstone creates a rich terroir that the grapes absolutely adore.

Barista Black MMXIX Pinotage is Barista's flagship wine. Developed a century ago at Stellenbosch University, Pinotage grapes have since earned the title of "national pride." Thanks to the warm and dry climate of Swartland, they create an unpredictable yet incredibly delicious wine. The 18 months of oak aging in barriques creates a beautiful display. Think plump plums and red berries. The finish reveals the signature braai spices characteristic of South African culture.
