In the south of France, in the Pays d'Oc wine region, we find the ancient vineyards of none other than the grand master Baron Philippe de Rothschild. This should ring a bell with all wine connoisseurs, as this prestigious winery produces some of the world's finest wines. Originally, they found their fortune in Bordeaux. But the winemakers at Baron Philippe de Rothschild wanted to demonstrate their ability to craft exquisite wines anywhere in the world. This is precisely what happened in the French Pays d'Oc wine region, where they purchased several vineyards, all rooted in very old soils. This results in excellent harvests, allowing them to produce red wine made exclusively from the Merlot grape variety. This is also where this wine series gets its name, "Les Cépages," meaning it's made from a single grape variety.

The Merlot harvest in Pays d'Oc

The vineyards for this red Merlot are quite old and are currently producing a very ripe harvest. This is largely due to their perfect location. The sun can easily do its work, and the fresh ocean breeze provides some cooling during the warm growing season. This creates the perfect climate for Merlot grapes, and combined with the rich soil structure, it produces a unique red wine. The winemakers of Baron Philippe de Rothschild pay close attention to the vineyards of Les Cépages Merlot, resulting in a pristine Merlot that is renowned worldwide.

Very soft this Baron Philippe de Rothschild Merlot

Upon opening this bottle, we immediately smell a powerful aroma of red and black fruit. In the glass, it shimmers ruby red with a light purple rim. We swirl the glass vigorously and then encounter a broad bouquet of black fruit, including cherries, blackberries, and blueberries. A touch of spice and cocoa linger in the background. The palate is pampered by soft tannins, accompanied by plenty of black fruit. Later, as this red Baron Philippe de Rothschild Merlot settles on the palate, we also detect hints of toasted bread and herbs. But what depth this red wine has!
