This Syrah perfectly reflects the Benguela Cove terroir in a glass. The seductive aroma, in particular, is so characteristic of the Syrah grape. And that's certainly not lacking in this Benguela Cove glass. The ripe dark fruit bursts from the glass, and you're treated to juicy, ripe tannins that provide plenty of structure.
A unique piece of vineyard in South Africa
The Benguela Cove winery is located just north of the town of Fisherhaven, near the Atlantic Ocean. They own a total of 62 hectares of vineyards. The grapes here enjoy a cool climate thanks to a sea breeze that blows across the estate. This makes this part of South Africa unique for winemaking. Ripening grapes that cool considerably at night and enjoy ample rainfall result in perfectly fresh and refined wines.
The vineyards selected for this wine were designed to evoke the inherent spice for which Syrah is known. The vines are managed with the utmost care to promote ripeness and complexity. The vines are planted on soils of shale and highly ferrous clay. This foundation gives this wine its unique character. In the cool of night, the grapes are harvested bunch by bunch. Upon arrival at the winery, the grapes are first cooled and then carefully selected, bunch by bunch and berry by berry. After a short cold maceration, the juice is brought back to room temperature and fermented for eight days in stainless steel tanks. After fermentation is complete, malolactic fermentation is completed in barrel.
