Bodegas Campillo Gran Reserva 2016 D.O.Ca. Rioja, Spain
Bodegas Campillo Gran Reserva 2016 is a classic Rioja Gran Reserva from Rioja Alavesa, produced by a winery that brought the château concept to Rioja. The wine matures for at least 24 months in French oak and perfectly demonstrates why this type of Rioja remains so beloved: ripe fruit, vanilla, licorice, soft spiciness, and a long, stately finish. With high international ratings and a strong Vivino score, this is a Gran Reserva offering both tradition and widely proven drinking pleasure.
Vineyards and region
This Gran Reserva comes from Rioja Alavesa, at the foot of the Sierra de Cantabria.
Location / Origin: Bodegas Campillo is located in Laguardia, in the heart of Rioja Alavesa. The winery operates on the château principle, with the vineyards situated close around the winery.
Altitude: The main vineyards are located at an altitude of 650–720 meters. This location provides cooler temperatures, more wind, and large differences between day and night, allowing the grapes to retain both ripeness and freshness.
Soil: The soils consist of clay limestone and ferruginous clay. This combination gives Tempranillo and Graciano structure, color, and a ripe yet fresh base.
Vineyard & Harvest: Campillo works with 150 hectares of its own vineyards and vines aged 30–70 years. The grapes are harvested by hand, ensuring that only healthy and ripe fruit reaches the cellar.
Winemaking and aging
The aging gives this Gran Reserva its classic combination of ripe fruit, woody spice, and round tannins.
Harvest & Selection: The grapes are harvested manually and carefully processed. This approach helps to keep the fruit pure and the tannins refined.
Aging / Oak Maturation: The wine matures for at least 24 months in French oak. What does Gran Reserva mean? This style is all about long aging, which deepens the fruit and creates notes of vanilla, toast, licorice, and soft spice.
Alcohol percentage: With 14.5% alcohol, this Rioja has sufficient power to support the long oak aging, while the fresh altitude of Rioja Alavesa provides balance.
Grape composition
This red Rioja combines Tempranillo with Graciano.
Tempranillo – D.O.Ca. Rioja: Tempranillo forms the base of the wine and provides ripe red fruit, black cherry, roundness, and the classic structure of Rioja.
Graciano – D.O.Ca. Rioja: Graciano adds color, freshness, spiciness, and extra length, giving the wine more tension and aging potential.
Tasting notes and serving suggestions
Intense cherry red in the glass, with a garnet rim and aromas of ripe fruit, vanilla, licorice, oak, and subtle roasted notes. The taste is full, round, and smooth, with ripe tannins, well-integrated acidity, and a broad structure. The finish is long, warm, and stately, with fruit, spiciness, and soft oak tones that linger beautifully.
Serving temperature: Serve this Gran Reserva at 16–18 °C, so that the ripe fruit, soft tannins, and spicy oak notes are well balanced.
Dishes: Excellent with red meat, rack of lamb, game dishes, mushroom risotto, tuna, cod, and medium-aged cheeses such as Emmental or Gruyère.

More information about Bodegas Campillo
Bodegas Campillo was opened in Laguardia in 1990, as a dream project by Julio Faustino Martínez. He wanted to build a true château bodega in Rioja, surrounded by its own vineyards and entirely focused on quality from the grape. The name Campillo refers to Viña Campillo, one of the first family properties, and the winery grew into a recognizable name for stylish Rioja Alavesa with depth, aging, and elegance.
