This red wine from Carlos Serres comes from the Rioja region but has a French touch. Winemaker Carlos Serres is originally a French winemaker who found happiness in the Spanish wine region of Rioja. His work took him all over the world and he visited many vineyards and wineries, but he was captivated by the quality of the Rioja wine region. He compared it to the best vineyards in Bordeaux, because the old vines grow in a similar climate where the Tempranillo grape dominates. His heart was stolen, and he left France to start a winery in the Rioja region. This turned out to be a perfect opportunity, as Phylloxera Vastatrix was raging in his French vineyards at the time, unfortunately destroying all the vines.
Wood aging for the Carlos Serres Rioja Crianza
For this red wine, the Carlos Serres Rioja Crianza, eighty-five percent Tempranillo grapes are used, with the remainder made up of Garnacha. This was Mr. Serres's own decision, as only Tempranillo was once found in Rioja. The Garnacha influence made the wines fuller and even more powerful. However, this doesn't happen by chance; the vineyards are worked hard to allow the grapes to truly shine. The climate in the vineyards combines abundant sunshine with just the right amount of coolness. The cool wind and falling nighttime temperatures are important for a balanced and even growing season. All grapes are harvested at ideal ripeness to obtain only the purest juice. After pressing, this Rioja Crianza is aged for six months in oak barrels in the Carlos Serres cellars. This allows it to fully develop and absorb the beautiful notes of the oak.

As soon as the bottle is opened, we smell a powerful aroma of black fruit, lovely spice, and of course, a touch of cedar. Pouring reveals a dark color with purple glints in the glass. Nosing the glass, we noted a range of notes, including blackberry and cherry, along with hints of spice and vanilla. The flavor is full and robust, with the perfect balance between fruitiness and strength. This Carlos Serres Rioja Crianza is therefore a gentle Rioja without losing its power.
