What a delicious glass of Chardonnay this is from the Insigne series. This series is unaged and made with fresh fruit. You can smell and taste that in this Carmen Insigne Chardonnay.
The beginning of Carmen winery
Christian Lanz founded the Carmen winery in 1850, naming it after his beloved wife, Carmen. In the early years, it led a relatively unassuming existence. This changed when it was acquired by the Claro family. Significant investments were made, resulting in the creation of one of Chile's most modern wineries. Built at the foot of the Andes, the new cellars were constructed so that all wine movement occurred solely by gravity. This allowed the winery to avoid the use of pumps, a method that could damage the wine and reduce its quality.
Chile has a perfect climate for vineyards. The cold Hulmboldt Current off the coast creates an offshore wind in summer, bringing dry weather and sunshine. The Andes provide ample meltwater. Without this water, Chile would have far more desert than the Atacama Desert, which lies along the coast. These conditions, and especially the dry climate, ensure minimal disease. This means that minimal pesticides are needed for winemaking, and organic winemaking is within easy reach here.
The harvest and taste of Carmen Insigne Chardonnay
The grapes for this white wine come from various vineyards. Harvested at night while still cool, they are then destemmed and very gently crushed before being pressed immediately. Some of the resulting juice is protected from oxidation throughout the process, while others are fermented without protection to allow for some oxidation. This results in greater aromatic complexity, creaminess, and volume. Fermentation takes place with very clean musts at a low temperature, allowing for maximum fresh fruit aromas. Delightful aromas of pineapple, banana, ripe mango, and a hint of caramel. The ripe and rich flavor completes the picture, with abundant notes of pineapple, red apple, yellow plum, nectarines, and white grapefruit. But this Carmen Insigne Chardonnay is remarkably smooth and flavorful, a true Chilean gem.
