A beautiful sparkling wine from sun-drenched Portugal. The blend consists of 85 percent Fernão Pires and 15 percent Arinto. While relatively unknown in the Netherlands, these are indigenous grape varieties in Portugal. The grape varieties complement each other exceptionally well, creating a good structure with pleasant acidity.

The family business Casa Ermelinda Freitas

About 50 kilometers from Lisbon, in the Peninsula de Setubal wine region, lies the Casa Ermelinda Freitas winery. It's located in the village of Fernando Po, to be precise. Founded in 1920, the winery is now run by the fourth generation. Leonor Freitas owns 240 hectares of vineyards in the DO Palmela region. Their wines are distinguished by the use of indigenous grape varieties, which are much less familiar to us in the Netherlands. Due to its prime location, Casa Ermelinda Freitas is considered the best wine producer in the region and regularly receives awards. The grapes are planted on sandy soil and enjoy a Mediterranean climate in the vineyards in Fernando Po. This climate ensures moderate temperatures, allowing the grapes to ripen evenly. After careful harvesting, the grapes are taken almost immediately to the winery. Here, a light fermentation takes place in stainless steel vats at a temperature of 16 to 18 degrees Celsius. A second fermentation then takes place in the bottle according to the traditional method. Finally, the wine rests in the bottle for another nine months.

How does the Casa Ermelinda Vinho Branco Espumante Gross taste?

The result is a fruity wine with a bright golden color. The aromas are reminiscent of citrus and abundant tropical fruit. On the palate, the Branco Espumante Bruto is well-structured with lovely acidity, giving this sparkling wine the necessary freshness. A refreshing, pleasant wine with a fruity finish that will leave you wanting a second sip.
