This wine is a delicious red wine with rich aromas of ripe fruit, made entirely from the Barbera grape. Barbera grapes are strong, productive, and have a deep red color. It is the most common grape variety in Piedmont. Wines made with Barbera grapes are pleasantly fresh on the palate, thanks to their characteristic acidity.
Four generations of quality wines
Cascina Ghercina was founded in 1871, and throughout the generations, a clear mission has been maintained: to prioritize only its own production and quality. In 2002, the family acquired an additional 8 hectares of vineyards, situated on southwestern slopes in the heart of the Barolo region. These vineyards are 360 meters above sea level, and the Ghercina River flows between the vines, providing an exclusive microclimate. They also built a 5,000m² cellar, partially underground, increasing storage capacity to over 15,000 hectoliters. The estate also has vineyards in the Langhe, Alba, Roero, Asti, Monferrato, and Gavi.
The vineyards are located around Lake Chercina in the renowned Langhe wine region, which is also where the name comes from. This location is exceptionally well-suited for vines. The lake creates a special microclimate that influences the surrounding vineyards. This gives the grapes very special characteristics, which they strive to preserve during vinification.
Manual harvest for Cascina Ghercina Appassimento Piemonte Barbera
Fifty percent of the grapes are harvested by hand and dried in baskets for forty days to further develop their color and aromas. The other fifty percent remains in the vineyard for a natural "appassimento" and is harvested later. Both parts of the harvest are vinified separately. After malolactic fermentation, the two wines are blended. The Cascina Ghercina Appassimento Piemonte Barbera is then aged for six months in small wooden barrels. A delicious wine with rich aromas of ripe fruit and cherries. Velvety tannins and an intense flavor experience.
