What a royal wine, this powerful Pauillac from the Château Gaudin family winery. Today, the third generation, Mrs. Jeanne Capdevielle, is at the helm of Château Gaudin. Her grandfather purchased the winery in 1901, situated between two renowned estates: Pichon Longueville and Lynch Bages. The small but now incredibly renowned winery began with 4 hectares of vineyards but has since grown to 11 hectares spread across several plots. The winery is still known for the finest classic Pauillac in the region, full-bodied and powerful with soft tannins.
The old Pauillac vineyard of Chateau Gaudin
For this red wine from Château Gaudin, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes are grown in the Pauillac wine region. The vineyards are now quite old, averaging 40 to 50 years. Pauillac is best known for its strong soil structure, which contains plenty of limestone and granite, allowing the grapes to absorb a wealth of nutrients. The wonderful climate, with warm summer days and cooling winds, creates a peaceful environment in the vineyards. The wind from the Gironde River provides the harvest with everything it needs to produce a top-notch wine. Jeanne Capdevielle is proud of her wine; let's be honest, at this price, it's a true discovery.
Wood aging for the Chateau Gaudin Pauillac
Once the harvest is complete, all the bunches are distributed across sorting tables. All bunches are inspected, and any unusable ones are removed. This makes this Château Gaudin Pauillac exceptionally pure and powerful. But the black juice truly develops its full power when aged in oak barrels. French oak barrels are selected, some of which are new and unused. This lends even more strength and suppleness to this red wine. After a minimum of twelve months, depending somewhat on the harvest, the wine is bottled and stored in the Château Gaudin cellar. After a long period of bottle aging, the bottles are ready for sale, as Jeanne Capdevielle believes it's crucial that bottles are only opened when they have reached the correct strength and refinement.
Full and very powerful this Chateau Gaudin Pauillac
Well, that's certainly a success: a wine that can still age further in the bottle, but is also delicious to drink now. Upon pouring, we see a beautiful deep red color with a purple rim. Its aroma is rich, bringing to mind hints of spice, delicate blackcurrant, and plum, as well as vanilla and cedarwood. The palate is full and complex, with soft tannins that tantalize the tongue. Beautiful flavors of toast, licorice, blackberry, and cherry. Later, as this red wine swirls in the mouth, it also reveals spices, a touch of bay leaf, and a touch of fresh plum. What a joy to drink.
