This beautiful family winery, Château La Haye, is located in the Saint-Estephe wine region. Its history stretches far back, with the first vineyards dating back to after 1557. This makes Château La Haye one of the oldest wineries in the region. Legend has it that the magnificent old château was the meeting place of King Henri II of France and his mistress, Diane de Poitiers. The initials of the two lovers are carved into the stone on the building's facade, a key element of Château La Haye's rich history.

The harvest for Saint Estephe

Meanwhile, a Belgian man is at the helm of the Château, Mr. Cardon. A former pharmacist who wanted to fulfill his love and dream for French winemaking. This passion led to the purchase of this beautiful old winery, and he is now assisted by Marc Quertinier. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes are grown on the old vineyards. The powerful soils, rich in pebbles and minerals, ensure a uniquely full harvest. The climate plays a significant role in this; the vineyards are planted on south-facing slopes, and the bunches receive plenty of cooling wind. The wind from the Gironde River provides the perfect coolness for the harvest. All bunches are harvested by hand and transported to Château La Haye in the morning. This is done to prevent damage and bruising to the bunches, but also to preserve the freshness of the grapes.

Wood aging for the Chateau La Haye Saint Estephe

The wines are further developed with the help of renowned French winemakers Marc Quertinier and Eric Boissenot. The latter is known for the Camensac winery, a well-known name in French viticulture. After determining the blend, the entire wine is aged in oak barrels for a minimum of fourteen months. Some of the barrels used are unused, which gives this red Saint Estephe extra power. On the nose, this translates into a warm and powerful aroma of black fruit, accompanied by notes of licorice, spices, cocoa, and, of course, vanilla. Swirl this red wine well in the glass to release all the flavors. Initially, it offers notes of blackberry and currant, accompanied by red spiciness. On the palate and in the cheeks, beautifully soft tannins develop with abundant notes of spice and cedar. The finish and later flavors reveal some chocolate and cloves. The ripe tannins make this wonderful wine a true gem. A wonderfully enjoyable, classic glass of red wine. For the connoisseur!
