The Carmes de Rieussec 2022 is the second wine from the prestigious Château Rieussec, located in the heart of the Sauternes appellation in Bordeaux. This wine offers an elegant expression of the château's unique terroir and expertise.
About the Domain
Founded in the 18th century, Château Rieussec is renowned for its exceptional Sauternes wines. Since 1984, it has been owned by Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite), which has led to continuous investment in quality and innovation.
Vineyard and Terroir
The Château Rieussec vineyards cover approximately 93 hectares and border the renowned Château d'Yquem. The soil consists primarily of clay and limestone, which contributes to the complexity and minerality of the wines. The grapes benefit from unique climatic conditions essential for the development of noble rot, a crucial factor in the production of the characteristic sweet Sauternes wines.
Vinification
The harvest period can last up to two months, as the botrytis fungus attacks each grape at a different time, ensuring they are only picked in perfect condition. After being harvested by hand, the grapes undergo fermentation in oak barrels. The wine then matures for 18 months in French oak barrels, some of which are new, to develop structure and complexity.
Tasting notes
The wine has a clear, light golden color. The nose reveals aromas of citrus, elderflower, honey, and orange peel. On the palate, the wine is rich and full-bodied, with balanced acidity that provides freshness. The finish is long and lush, with lingering notes of ripe fruit and subtle oak nuances.
Serving Temperature and Gastronomic Combinations
Serve this wine chilled at 10-12°C. The 2022 Carmes de Rieussec is an excellent accompaniment to foie gras, blue cheeses, and fruit-based desserts such as tarte tatin or apricot clafoutis. Its sweetness and acidity also make it an ideal partner for spicy Asian dishes.
