The special working method of Clos Saint Jean

In 1910, Guy Maurel founded the Clos Saint Jean winery, focusing entirely on robust red wines. But in 2001, this changed when brothers Pascal and Vincent Maurel took over the helm. They decided to deviate from their father's long-standing methods. While their father had always operated very traditionally, the brothers believed their vineyards and the grapes they had planted held much greater potential. They enlisted the help of winemaker Philippe Cambie and, in 2003, produced arguably the best wine of that vintage. Today, the three still work in the vineyards and produce many successful wines that have garnered international acclaim. The grapes for this Châteauneuf du Pape Blanc come from the Clos Saint Jean vineyard. The grapes are carefully harvested separately. They are transported directly to the winery where they are pressed as whole bunches. Only the Roussanne grapes undergo a short maceration on the skins. After pressing, fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks and oak barrels. The wine is then aged briefly on the lees, which gives the final wine a slightly creamier flavor.
