The South Tyrolean vineyards of Colternezio
The Uberetsch region of South Tyrol in northern Italy is known for its fresh, elegant whites and peppery reds. One of the region's leading wineries is Cantina Colterenzio, founded in 1960 by 26 local grape growers. Today, the cooperative has over 300 growers and 300 hectares of vines spread across the rolling hills, including some of South Tyrol's top locations. In 1979, the pioneering winemaker Luis Raifer took over the management of the cooperative. Inspired by a study trip to California, Raifer recognized the potential of their vineyards and introduced a thoroughly modern, quality-focused winemaking philosophy. One of Colterenzio's finest vineyards today is Lafoa, near the town of Girlan, where the fruit for this elegant Chardonnay is sourced.
10 months of aging for Colterenzio Lafoa Chardonnay
Lafoa lies at an altitude of 450-550 meters, with well-drained sandy and gravelly soils well-suited to the old Chardonnay vines planted here. Initially, there is a cool microclimate with significant temperature variations between day and night. The grapes are harvested by hand at peak ripeness. Whole clusters are gently pressed. The must is vinified traditionally, with fermentation and aging in oak barrels. The young wine is aged on the lees for 10 months, with regular stirring to add complexity. This results in a rich, full-bodied Chardonnay with abundant tropical fruit notes.
Colterenzio's Chardonnay is an intense and smooth white wine. The nose reveals alpine flowers, mountain herbs, butter, and dried fruit. On the palate, this wine is soft, creamy, and buttery, with a delightful freshness in the pleasant finish.
