This is the crowning achievement of the hard work of all the affiliated winegrowers: the king's wine, this Coto Mayor Gran Reserva. It's the winery's finest Rioja wine, made from the finest Tempranillo bunches. Coto Mayor boasts a rich history, having been founded in 1970 by several Rioja winegrowers. They were convinced their grapes were perfect and, through collaboration, could create a top-tier winery. And they were right, because from the very first pressing, this wine has become a renowned wine. Coto Mayor has since received numerous world-renowned wine awards, a fact all the growers are proud of. Today, their success is clearly visible, as they now have a total of 110 hectares of vineyards. Over the years, many growers have joined this cooperative. With so much knowledge and significant investment in recent years, the Coto Mayor winery has become one of our favorite wines.

The best red wine from Coto Mayor

Bodega El Coto de Rioja is located in Oyón (Alava) in the Rioja Alta region. Its vineyards are also located there, largely consisting of iron-rich clay soil. The Tempranillo for the Gran Reserva is grown along the Najerilla River, an estuary of the Ebro River. This climate is perfect for the Tempranillo grape: abundant sunshine, cooling winds, and sharply falling nighttime temperatures contribute to a unique harvest. This harvest is harvested entirely by hand to select only the finest bunches for their flagship Gran Reserva.

Full and very powerful this Coto Mayor Gran Reserva

The Coto Mayor Rioja Gran Reserva is a beautiful, deep red wine. Its aromas are ripe and fruity, with notes of strawberry jam and candied cherries complemented by the warm, woody notes of vanilla, coconut, and mildly spicy spices. On the palate, this is a powerhouse. A classic Rioja as Rioja was meant to be! This powerful wine has had ample time to develop its suppleness, softness, and roundness thanks to its 30-month barrel aging followed by two years of bottle aging in the cellars of Bodega Coto Mayor. This is accompanied by beautiful impressions of ripe black fruit and delicious vanilla notes. What a gem!
