With a total vineyard of currently 110 hectares, Coto Mayor is a major player in the Rioja region. But it started very small in 1970. It was a group of winegrowers with extensive knowledge of Rioja viticulture who wanted to establish a new winery together. It has been a success, and many winegrowers have since joined this fine winery. Together they produce the finest wines at excellent, affordable prices. They are proud of this, but it took hard work and significant investment. Coto Mayor boasts a modern winery and the very best wooden barrels, guaranteeing quality year after year.

Wood aging for the Coto Mayor Reserva

This red wine is made entirely from Tempranillo grapes, sourced from one of Coto Mayor's oldest vineyards. The old, thick stems now yield a magnificent harvest. Full and round with abundant flavor, but this didn't happen by chance. Significant investment has gone into the wine, and extensive pruning takes place during the growing season. This ensures that only the finest bunches remain, all of which are harvested by hand. Each bunch is thoroughly inspected before being placed in a wooden crate. This gives this red Rioja Reserva its exceptional purity and style. The entire wine is aged for an impressive 18 months in French oak barrels, some of which are new and unused. After this period, the Reserva is bottle-aged for another two years in the Coto Mayor cellars.

The scent and taste of the Reserva Coto Mayor

The Coto Mayor Reserva is deep red in color. The aroma reveals deliciously ripe yet fruity notes of strawberries and cherries, complemented by subtle woody notes of vanilla, small cedarwood, and mildly spicy spices. This powerful red wine has had ample time to develop its suppleness, softness, and roundness thanks to its 18 months of oak aging followed by two years of bottle aging in the beautiful cellars of Bodega Coto Vintage. This wine is certainly supple, soft, and round, boasting the beautiful tannins characteristic of a good Rioja. A gem of a red wine!
