The beginning of De Grendel winery

De Grendel takes its name from the fact that the estate was once the gateway to the Cape's vibrant agricultural hinterland, which includes Durbanville and Stellenbosch. The vineyards are situated on slopes 350 meters above sea level and benefit from the cooling air of the Atlantic Ocean. The farm is one of South Africa's historic farms. The oldest evidence dates back to 1720 and was purchased in the 19th century by the Graaff family, who still manage it today. The Sauvignon Blanc vineyards are planted on slate soil 200 meters above sea level on the slopes of Tygerberg. Using analysis, phenolic ripeness, and flavor compositions, the grapes are hand-picked in batches over a period of three weeks. After six hours of skin contact, the juice is settled, racked, and seeded to ferment in tank at 14 degrees Celsius for 22 days. 80 days of lees contact enhance the flavor and body of this Sauvignon Blanc.

The Grendel Sauvignon Blanc is more focused on the fruity notes than the Koetshuis Sauvignon Blanc. Its color is straw yellow with a light green finish. The aroma offers delightful bursts of citrus, pineapple, passion fruit, freshly mown grass, and light mineral notes. You can practically smell the sun in the glass! The palate is a true explosion of delicious exotic notes, interspersed with yellow fruit and mild mineral notes. This refreshing Sauvignon Blanc is perfectly balanced, making it a very pleasant wine to drink.
