In the southern tip of Burgundy lies the Luquet Depuis 1878 winery. Located west of Macon, it was founded in 1878 and is a symbol of unique and powerful Burgundy wines. Today, the fifth generation is at the helm of the family estate, and the taste of it is palpable. Patrick and Christine Depuis inherited winemaking expertise from a young age. The brother and sister now share responsibilities at the renowned winery and continue to produce the finest classic wines in southern Burgundy. When it was founded, the winery had only 4.7 hectares of vineyards, but it has since grown to encompass 30 hectares.
The harvest of the Pinot Noir
The vineyards for this Pinot Noir were completely renovated in 2013. This was necessary because the old vines were no longer producing good bunches, but after just three years, it proved to be a great success. The first wine is made from the new vines, and it proved a success that went viral. The young vines, rooted in the clay and marl subsoil, together produced a bumper harvest. The climate prevailing in the vineyards was the foundation of this success. Plenty of sunshine and cool nights, combined with the breeze from the mountaintops, completed the success. After a long growing season, all the bunches are harvested by hand and strictly controlled. Only the best are used in the wine, and wooden barrels are not used. They are simply used because the resulting juice is so good.
Full and very powerful this Domaine Luquet 1878 Bourgogne Pinot Noir
Pouring it, we knew for sure that this wine was nothing but a lie. We saw a beautiful, bright red color with a slight orange shimmer. It smelled abundantly of cherries, fresh plums, and violets. A vigorous swirl of the glass revealed some spice and earthy notes. The palate enchanted with soft tannins and abundant red fruit. Strawberries, raspberries, and currants were prominent, complemented by some herbs and bay leaf. The finish had lovely, light acidity that made everything very exciting. A complete glass of Pinot Noir from Burgundy!
